Game Boy Color

Nintendo's follow-up to the Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Color was first released in Japan in October of 1998 and North America in November of the same year. Like Nintendo's earlier Game Boy iterations, the Game Boy Color (GBC) featured an 8-bit processor—though this version featured a colored graphics display instead of a monochromatic display—and no onboard screen lighting. The GBC was an instant hit, thanks to games like Pokemon Gold/Silver, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and Dragon Warrior Monsters. However, its dominance of the handheld market was short-lived, as Nintendo released the 32-bit Game Boy Advance in March of 2001.
