Super Nintendo

The Super Famicom, or Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was first released in Japan in 1990 and in North America the following year. Nintendo's second programmable home console, the SNES represented the company's foray into the 16-bit market. This kicked off the "console wars" as the SNES was a direct competitor to SEGA's Genesis. While the console itself featured upgraded graphics capabilities over the NES, the SNES controller also introduced a new four-button layout that largely remains the centerpiece of modern controller design. The SNES supported several peripheral accessories, including the Super Scope light gun, the Super Advantage arcade pad, the SNES mouse, and the Super Game Boy adapter. Many SNES games—including Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, and Street Fighter II—are considered legendary and have received ports to other systems. The SNES remained in production until 2003 and sold more than 49 million units worldwide.
