Wii U
Released in November of 2012, Nintendo's Wii U was the company's follow-up to the highly successful Wii. While the original Wii's most notable feature was its motion-tracking Wii Remote controller, the Wii U utilized the Wii U Gamepad—a controller that featured an embedded touchscreen as its centerpiece. The touchscreen could be used to supplement the main television display or to play games on the Gamepad directly. The Wii U was also fully compatible with all Wii games and accessories, including the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers. The Wii U was Nintendo's first attempt at supporting high-definition graphics and was designed to be a direct competitor to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though the console was not as critically or commercially successful. While the Wii U did boast some beloved games—including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World—it remained in production for just over four years and was replaced by the Nintendo Switch in early 2017.
