Neo Geo

First released in Japan in 1990, the Neo Geo was a family of gaming systems developed and sold by SNK. The arcade-designated Neo Geo MVS and home console Neo Geo AES were virtually identical, which allowed for accurate and near-perfect ports from the arcade to the living room. However, the AES carried a hefty price tag that made direct competition with Sega's Genesis and Nintendo's SNES difficult. The Neo Geo CD was released in 1994 with a lower price point and the use of CD-ROM games instead of cartridges. While the Neo Geo CD was bundled with a gamepad instead of a joystick like the AES, the AES joystick was compatible. While the Neo Geo was not a widely popular system, several games—including Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown, Metal Slug, Blazing Star, and The King of Fighters—were well-received and still hold a special place in the hearts of some gamers. Handheld consoles like the Neo Geo Pocket and the Neo Geo Pocket Color were also available, though the original run of Neo Geo systems ended in 2004. SNK reentered the console market in 2018 with the release of the Neo Geo Mini.
