Playstation

While PlayStation is one of the most well-known video-game brands now, this wasn't the case in the early 1990s. When Sony decided to enter the home console market with the original PlayStation in Japan in 1994, gamers more familiar with Nintendo and Sega had every reason to be skeptical. Consoles like Panasonic's 3DO and SNK's Neo Geo were not major successes. The PlayStation was, however, selling more than 102 million units worldwide and establishing Sony as a power in the gaming world. The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, the PlayStation 3 followed in 2006, and the PlayStation 4 arrived in 2013. Sony also produced the handheld PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita, though these didn't fare as well as the company's home consoles. Thanks to features like the PlayStation Network and PlayStation VR, PlayStation remains one of the most popular gaming brands in the world today. The PlayStation 5 was released worldwide in November of 2020 and represents Sony's latest offering to the gaming community.
