Playstation 1

First released in Japan in 1994, Sony's PlayStation represented the company's leap into the home console market. Designed to compete with the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Saturn—though, ironically, its roots were seeded in a failed attempt by Sony and Nintendo to create a CD_Rom peripheral for the SNES. Utilizing CD-Rom technology and a reliance on third-party developers, Sony's gaming debut was an instant success. Games like Tekken, Ridge Racer, and Wipeout helped the PlayStation gain a foothold in the gaming market. Later titles like Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII helped establish it as a powerhouse. The original PlayStation was replaced by a redesigned model, the PS One in 2000, coinciding with the release of the PlayStation 2. The PS One remained in production through 2006. In total, the PlayStation sold more than 102 million units worldwide.
