32X

Released in 1994 in both Japan and North America, the Sega 32X was—like the Sega CD—an add-on for the company's Genesis console. The 32X was designed to expand the power of the Genesis, allowing the system to play 32-bit games. The final version of the 32X featured two 32-bit processors and a 3D-graphics engine. The 32X was supposed to give Genesis owners a less-expensive entry point into 32-bit gaming, but the announcement of the upcoming Sega Saturn caused many third-party developers to steer clear. While the 32X did feature some hit games—including Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing Deluxe, and Star Wars Arcade—a limited library and the knowledge that the Saturn was on the horizon mostly kept buyers away too. In all, the 32X shipped roughly 800,000 units worldwide.
