Saturn

The Saturn was Sega's follow-up to its massively successful Genesis. Released in Japan in 1994 and in North America the following year, the Saturn became a direct competitor to the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo's N54. Utilizing true 32-bit CD-based hardware, the Saturn was an upgrade over Genesis add-ons, the 32X and the Sega CD. While the Saturn was initially popular, it was quickly overshadowed by both the PlayStation and the N64 and replaced by the Sega Dreamcast in 1998—though it remained in Japanese production through 2000. While the Saturn had several quality games—including Shining Force 3, Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Virtua Fighter 2, and NIGHTS into Dreams—a limited library and the lack of a Sonic the Hedgehog title quickly pushed the Saturn to the wayside.
